Dr. Virji-Babul is a physical therapist, neuroscientist, and Associate Professor in the Dept. of Physical Therapy, Faculty of Medicine, and Senior Advisor to the Provost on Women and Gender-Diverse Faculty at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Her laboratory is based at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health.
Her research program in cognitive neuroscience has two streams: (a) basic science studies focused on understanding brain structure and function underlying action perception/action execution networks, motor learning and the development of novel methods to analyze resting state effective connectivity and, (b) applied research studies of brain injury focused on identifying early indicators of concussion/mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) in adolescents, and on developing effective methods to improve recovery from TBI in adults.
Building on her ongoing efforts to understand brain organization, she and her team have been investigating the use of a novel connectivity measure based on information flow rates to map causal, directionally-dependent interactions between different brain regions, i.e. effective connectivity. This is a powerful, more principled approach compared with other effective connectivity measures for mapping the direction of information flow in the brain.
Her work with collaborators — who have expertise in big data, machine learning, and statistical analysis — has led to a new line of study which applies and tests a deep learning neural network to automatically classify concussed athletes from healthy athletes using raw, resting-state EEG data.
DR. JAMIE HUTCHISON | MD, PhD
Dr. Jamie Hutchison is a critical care physician and leads the Neurocritical Care Program in the Department of Critical Care at SickKids, Toronto. He is also a Senior Scientist in the Neuroscience and Mental Health Research Program at SickKids and a Professor of Medicine at the University of Toronto.
He is the Co-Chair, with Dr. Alexis Turgeon, of the Canadian Traumatic Brain Injury Research Consortium (CTRC) which is funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, and a member of the International Initiative for Traumatic Brain Injury Research..
The goal of Dr. Hutchison’s research program is to improve survival and quality of life among survivors of acquired brain injuries. He is the principal investigator of a 7-centre research platform titled "A Canadian Biobank and Database for Traumatic Brain Injury (CanTBI),” funded by Brain Canada and partners. He is also the co-principal investigator, with Dr. John Granton, of the “Inhaled Nitric Oxide for Cardiac Arrest in Paediatrics and Adults (iNOCAPA)” randomized control trial and translational biology study, funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Canada.
IVEY CHIU | B.A.Sc, M.A.Sc, PhD
Ivey Chiu is a data professional with a wide domain of expertise in wireless networks, e-commerce, and Artificial Intelligence. She has a B.A.Sc. in Manufacturing Systems Engineering from the Department of Engineering Science, an M.A.Sc., and a Ph.D. from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering — all from the University of Toronto. In her role as Engineering Program Manager – Special Projects with the TELUS Data Strategy & Enablement Team, she leads internal and external data and AI projects with partners such as the Vector Institute, the Alan Turing Institute in the UK, the GSMA, and various start-ups. Recently, in collaboration with the Vector Institute, she primed the open sourcing of a reference solution for an AI algorithm to reduce electricity consumption and greenhouse gas emissions associated with HVAC. This initiative demonstrates TELUS’ thought leadership in the area of AI, Sustainability, and Open Source solutions.
ANNE VIVIAN-SCOTT | PEng, B.A.Sc, MBA
Ms. Anne Vivian-Scott has spent most of her diversified career dedicated to the challenging task of commercializing university-sourced discoveries into sustainable product and business opportunities. Since 2010, she’s been ‘walking the talk’ as President and CEO of Kinarm — a company dedicated to transforming the clinical management of brain injuries and disease. She and the co-founders, Drs. Stephen Scott and Ian Brown, grew the company organically into a highly-specialized manufacturer of interactive robotics, providing neuroscientists and clinician researchers with the tools they need to study brain function, injury, or disease. They’re on a journey to change the clinical assessment of brain function to enable better outcomes from brain injury or disease.
Their unique product, called Kinarm, provides exquisite measurements of human behaviour that reveals how the brain is functioning. With continued support from Queen’s Centre for Neuroscience Studies, they have developed a broad-based assessment protocol called Kinarm Standard Tests that has been used to study over two dozen different neurological and non-neurological indications. Their protocol provides essential information about the extent of injury or progress of disease. That information is now driving change in the management of brain injury and disease. Today, there are over 120 Kinarm Labs in research institutions and hospitals around the world.
A graduate of the University of Waterloo (B.A.Sc. Chem Eng, ‘89) and Concordia University (MBA, ‘95), Ms. Vivian-Scott brings a diverse set of skills to every challenge she faces, from quality-managed production engineering, to finance-accounting, and sales and marketing.
